Soup for the American People

Center on Contemporary Art, Seattle, 2004
One hour

A performance for a group show entitled “101 Ways To Remove A President From Power.”

Attempting to embody the stated theme while refraining from one-sided political commentary, the performance juxtaposed the extreme abstraction of political theory and power with the incarnate life of actual Americans.

While cooking a pot of soup for the actual American people present at the opening, we wore headphones through which taped text played. We recited the text as we made the soup.

Matthew’s text consisted of hundreds of quotes from a Google internet search on the phrase “The American People,” while Tamara’s was taken from a web site where users posted short stories about Wonder Woman wrestling with Nazi guards.

After the soup was complete, it was utterly consumed by the American people.
