The Library of Nature

VAIN Gallery, Seattle, 2003
Forty-five minutes

Matthew eating an apple among apples suspended from strings.

The beginning of work involving a single action rather than a series of potentially infinite improvised actions; also of creating an installation that not only functioned during the performance but could be viewed before and after. The action asked whether the scientific and mystical views of nature are mutually exclusive and explored the simple wonder of nature and growth. We hung one hundred apples in a grid from the ceiling of the gallery using twine. The natural materials contrasted with the rigid organization, the apples simultaneously identical and individual, subtly moving like an atomic-level view of a crystal. As anonymous workers, we entered the installation, breaking the apples one by one with our teeth and planting the seeds in the dirt covering the floor.
